Installation is as easy as 1, 2, 3.
Tankslapper and 3M installation extended instructions at bottom of page.

Spray your tank with some water then wipe it down with the squeegee to remove any small particles that may cause small air pockets after the install is complete.

Now re-spray the tank with a generous amount of water.

Peel the Tankslapper off it's backing and place it on the tank.

Line the bottom of the Tankslapper up with the bottom line of the tank pocket by sliding it into place.

Spray some more water on top of the Tankslapper.

Use your finger to smooth out most of the big air bubbles.

Spray a little more water on top of the Tankslapper.

Take the squeegee and wipe from the center out in all directions. Use just enough pressure to remove the excess water.

Hold the Tankslapper in place with your fingers as you squeegee off the excess water

Wipe the reamining water off your tank with a soft cloth.

*This product will not adhere to low gloss or flat paint finishes

*Not Suitable for Power Washing.

Please read before beginning installation.

The things you’ll need include: water, 70% isopropyl (rubbing alcohol), a spray bottle, a small squeegee blade, and if conditions warrant, a heat gun or hair dryer. Mix together into your sprayer a mixture of 30% alcohol and 70% water

Do not allow water to touch the release paper until the film is removed; this could cause de-lamination of the paper resulting in permanently imbedded bits of paper in the film.

Begin by dry fitting all pieces while still attached to the release paper, the shape should fit inside the indentation that forms the knee well area of your tank sides. The center section is intended to begin coverage within a half inch or so of the saddle.

The paint surface must be free of contaminates, we recommend waxing your tank before the Tankslapper is applied, this will increase adhesion and remove grime. You’ll also want to make sure there is no dust, lint or any other particles on your paint finish before applying. If left, unintended elements under the film will be clearly visible after the film is installed and allowed to dry for a day or so. We suggest flowing water over your tank after waxing to remove all particles.

If the temperature at installation time falls below 65 degrees F you may need an artificial heat source such as a heat gun or high temperature hair dryer to soften the “Tankslapper” material when applying it over contours.

Begin the installation by spraying the tank with the installation solution, then remove the “Tankslapper” film from the release paper and spray it on both sides with the same alcohol and water solution, position and begin to squeegee away the installation solution starting in the center, working toward the edges gradually, radiating out in all directions simultaneously. You should be striving to remove as much solution as possible from under the film. Repeat for the remaining pieces, and that's it.

Some Tips:

It may be helpful to stretch the film over harsh contours to help manipulate the film into compliance. This technique is typically used at the rear of the tank - belt buckle area – and is described in the following link: Installing film over contours”

With very dry conditions, it will be difficult to keep the “Tankslapper” from attracting dust and lint as you remove it from the release paper. Look for damp days and little wind, representing the best installation conditions. The nature of this material is such that it attracts more, the dryer it is, and this can include lint which will appear as bubbles after installed. In less than ideal conditions we recommend you have a small bucket of water close by that you can dunk the film into just before you lift it into position, letting foreign material flow off as you pull it up out of the water, this will reduce static at the same time.

If bulking or lifting occurs along the edge in the first minutes after squeegeeing on the “Tankslapper”, this can be remedied with the application of heat while squeegeeing those difficult areas again, keeping the surface wet.. Lifting is the result of the films memory, resisting the new form you’re trying to get it to assume.

Modifying our squeegee can be accomplished by applying the soft half of a Velcro strip over the blade edge, this will reduce drag allowing you to press more firmly while working the squeegee, in addition reduce the chances of scuffing-up the film surface. If you don’t have a suitable squeegee, a credit card with the soft half of a Velcro strip over the edge is also suitable.

While the film will look good and be ready for use immediately after installation, its appearance and adhesion will improve further after 12 to 24 hours when it has had a chance to fully dry out.

If you’re not satisfied with the position or look of the film, remember it is reusable and can be reinstalled at anytime if necessary to correct problems.

When the film is not in use - note the side intended to face your paint - and store affixed to a clean dense surface like glass or Plexiglas to preserve the static treatment.

All of the aboveTankslapper” instructions apply to the 3M film as well, with a few exceptions as follows:

This film will stick to low gloss finishes, but at the same time will render a glossy look to whatever it is covering.

The 3M version is ready to use immediately, not need to wait to wash or ride your bike

You should use the Johnson’s Baby Shampoo and water mixture as your primary installation solution - 5 drops to 8 ounces of water is a good starting point – Keep the alcohol and water mixture – 70% water to 30% isopropyl - standing by for any areas along the edges that lift, usually where applied over a contour. It’s a faster drying solution that should be sprayed generously in between the film and the paint to flush away the soapy solution and accelerate adhesion.

You can remove the 3M film at anytime during the installation process, but not to where you can reuse it again if it’s allowed to stay attached to your paint for an hour, or even less in some cases. It will have begun to setup to the point to where it would nictitate excessive force to get it to release in such a way the you could reinstall without cosmetic damage to the adhesive side of the film, e.g. finger prints, stretching it out of shape, in other words the term “invisible” would no longer apply. If your want more time to install the film and extend the period of time you can remove it beyond the “estimated” hour, add more soap. Then when you’re sure you have it the way you want it, pull it back a half at a time, re-flood with the recommended soap ratio and squeegee it back on again.

Use a rag, pushing it off the edge of the film at the end of the process to blot up water before the water has a chance to migrate back under the film, as soon a the squeegee is pulled away. This will help in stubborn areas that won’t stay down.

We supply a 3M installation blade with each kit containing 3M film pieces, but it needs to be modified to improve its performance and prevent scuffing of the film. While the film luster can be returned to a like new finish anytime after installation by buffing with mild compound and polish, it’s best to cover the blade edge with the pile – fuzzy - side of a Velcro strip to reduce drag and scratching. A piece of thin cloth is okay too.

We also send along a small remnant of 3M film for you to practice with before you begin the installation of the actual pieces of your kit. This will help you to familiarize yourself with the characteristics of the film; in addition it will afford you an opportunity to test your installation solution ratio to see if it is suitable for the installation conditions. Hot weather accelerates adhesion and could necessitate a few more drops of soap. Not enough soap will make it difficult to remove trapped water and air pockets and leave you with a bubbly finish. Blisters of water are okay to leave to evaporate out through the film on their own; few days of warm weather is all that’s necessary. The same can not be said for trapped air, so if you see air pockets, pull the film back to that point, spray more installation solution and continue

Do not seal the edge – the last ¼ to ½ inch - of the film anywhere on any piece until you are sure it is the way you want it, this will help in two ways: First it will reduce bunching up of the film in any one spot. The film will squirm around as you begin to squeegee it, in a effort to find the path of least resistance – and in some instances needs to be helped along by stretching - and by working with it here, you will find it easier to polish off the edge without the film buckling up or folding over onto itself . Second it will give you something to grab onto – use the blade of the squeegee instead of a finger on the adhesive side of the film to yank the film off – in the event that removal is necessary to reposition or re-flood the working area.

If the practice piece leaves you feeling like the task is beyond your skill level, don’t go on to the kit pieces before you seek help or decide to return it, because we can’t take the kit back simply because you failed to get satisfactory results. Once you remove the film from the release paper, we can’t resell it, and subsequently can’t offer a refund.  Drop by our shop for free installation if possible, or seek professional installers in you area. Even though we design our patterns not to be too ambitious in its coverage, taking into a account that a do-it-yourselfer is going to attempt the installation on their own, we can’t guarantee that anyone can install it, because skill levels vary. If you don’t trust your skill level and think you might have trouble, then we recommend you consider the “Tankslapper” film, its fool prove. But at the same time does an equally good job of protecting your paint.

We offer these tips from our training and experience installing film, and are more than willing to coach by phone if needed, 7 days a week. These are the key points, and if done properly will lead to an unbelievably invisible protective skin that will leave your paint finish in showroom condition. As a matter of fact, there will be no way you can harm your paint finish with this film in place without damaging the panel below.
